Overview

Nahargarh Fort is a historic hilltop fort in Jaipur. It stands on the edge of the Aravalli Hills and looks across the entire city. The fort was built in 1734 by Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur.

Nahargarh Fort was built to protect the city. It worked as part of a defense system with Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort. Even though it served a defensive role, the fort was also used as a royal retreat. Members of the royal family often stayed here away from the busy city.

About Nahargarh Fort

Nahargarh Fort stands on the edge of the Aravalli Hills and looks over the city of Jaipur. The fort was built in 1734 by Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur. It was part of the city's defense system along with Amber Fort and Jaigarh Fort.

The name Nahargarh means “abode of tigers.” Local stories also link the name to a spirit called Nahar Singh whose presence was believed to disturb construction. A small temple was later built in his memory inside the fort.

Unlike many forts in Rajasthan, Nahargarh was mainly used as a retreat for the royal family rather than a battlefield. The fort has long corridors, royal rooms, and beautiful courtyards. One of the most famous parts is Madhavendra Bhawan, a palace built for the king and his queens. Each queen had separate suites connected by common corridors.

Today the fort is known for its hilltop views, sunset points, and historic architecture. Visitors often come here to see the city from above and walk through the old palace structures.
