Bada Bagh

Overview

Bada Bagh is a historic garden complex located a few kilometers from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan. The site is known for its royal cenotaphs built in memory of the rulers of Jaisalmer.

The garden was first developed in the sixteenth century by Maharawal Jait Singh. Later rulers added memorial structures called chhatris for members of the royal family.

These cenotaphs are made from yellow sandstone and stand on a small hill overlooking the desert landscape. Because of this setting, Bada Bagh has become a popular place for photography and sightseeing.

Today the site reflects the royal history of Jaisalmer and offers visitors a quiet place to view historic architecture.

About Bada Bagh

Bada Bagh means Big Garden. There used to be a garden here along with a water source for farming.

Later on, this place started being used by the Jaisalmer rulers as a cremation site. Cenotaphs were built in memory of kings and other family members.

If you look closely, each one is a bit different. They were built at different times, so the style changes from one to another.

Now people come here to see these structures and spend some quiet time at the site.
